How to Cleanse and Charge Your Garnet Stone

How to Cleanse and Charge Your Garnet Stone

There are multiple ways to cleanse your garnet stone. Allowing the method you choose to be a matter of preference and convenience is completely fine; however, the garnet stone being born of fire might respond the best to being cleansed and energized by fire.

Cleansing and Charging Garnet with Flame

You’ll want to practice uttermost caution when working with flame not to burn yourself. With that being said, you can place the garnet stone near a source of flames, such as near your fireplace or a bonfire to both simultaneously cleanse and charge your garnet stone.

Take Special Care When Using Fire

Keep the stone there for no more than 20-30 minutes for your safety, and use a non-flammable item to pull it away from the fire and allow it to cool before handling it.

Smudging to Cleanse Garnet Stone

Smudge cleansing is also an acceptable way to cleanse garnet stones. To cleanse your garnet stone in this manner, burn a smudge or incense stick and hold it in the wafting smoke, allowing it to whisk away the stored energies.

Fan the Smoke

You only need to expose the stone to the smoke for about 20-30 seconds for the magic to take effect. For an added extra touch, you can use a feather to fan the smoke over the garnet stone.

Incenses for Smudging

Certain incenses are perfect for this task, such as sage, sweetgrass, sandalwood, and cedarwood. These incenses, when burned, are quite effective in removing unwanted energies.

Charging Garnet with the Sun

While not every stone is suitable to be charged in the Sun’s rays, garnet — born of fire — is perfectly suited to withstand the Sun’s light. An hour or two is recommended, but if you happen to leave it a little longer does not be dismayed.

Sun Charged Garnet Can Be Hot

Be careful when picking the stone up afterward because it may be hot! Try to time the charging of your garnet stone with the soft light of sunrise or the easing light of sunset.

Cleansing Garnet Stone with Visualization

You can use your incredible power of visualization to clear your garnet stone as well. While holding your garnet stone (either hand is fine, but some are more comfortable using their recessive hand to generate the energy and their dominant hand to receive it), picture a glowing white light forming just behind your Third Eye.

An olive green andradite garnet specimen.

Visualization Cleansing Exercise

Visualize this light traveling from your Third Eye toward the base of your neck, then down the arm holding the garnet stone. Place your other hand over the garnet stone, palm down, and picture the white light traveling through it, cleansing it as it passes through, and being captured by your other outstretched palm.

Releasing the Energy

Picture this light traveling up your receiving arm and returning to the ball of light behind your Third Eye, then release the light through the Crown, as you don’t want to hold on to this energy.

Garnet Stone History

Garnet Stone History

Garnet has been used in jewelry well into antiquity. Sumerian jewelry decorated with garnet has been discovered that dates back to 2100 B.C., and in Sweden garnet jewelry has also been found dating back from 1000 to 200 B.C.

Egyptian Pharaohs Were Buried with Garnet

The Egyptians prized the fiery glow of the garnet stone. As far back as 5,000 years ago, Egyptian pharaohs would proudly wear necklaces laden in red garnet, and garnet decorated their mummified corpses — a prized possession they could take with them into the afterlife.

The Celts Used Garnet for Protection

Celtic High Priests would inlay garnet stones into their breastplates for protection, and garnet was inserted into Celtic jewelry as well. In Africa, the garnet stone was sacred to tribal elders.

Sealed with Garnet

The Ancient Greeks and Romans were also very fond of the garnet stone. To seal the Ancient Romans’ most important documents, they would stamp the wax with signet rings with a carved garnet stone. During the Roman scholar Pliny’s time (23 to 79 AD), red garnet stones enjoyed a heyday among the most widely traded gems in the region.

Garnet and Christianity

Garnet’s magical history can be traced through the biblical record and the influence of Christianity. Surprisingly enough, the Bible references garnet stone at least four times, although it is referred to as carbuncle.

A.K.A. Carbuncle

Throughout history, the word carbuncle is typically used to describe red garnet, but it also has been used to describe a myriad of other red stones. According to tradition, it is said that carbuncle was one of the four precious stones gifted to King Solomon by God.

The Light of Noah’s Ark

It was a large garnet stone’s fiery inner glow that provided light to Noah’s Ark, according to the Talmud. Garnet is also one of the 12 stones in the Breastplate of the High Priest, representing the tribe of Judah.

A Talisman for Christian Crusaders

Garnet has a history of being referred to as the Warrior’s stone, as evidenced by the Crusades, where Christian crusaders wore garnet stone as a protective talisman, as did their Muslim enemies.

Garnet in the Middle Ages

In Europe during the Middle Ages (circa 475 to 1450 AD), garnet was used to fortify one’s strength, give clarity to the truth, steel one’s loyalty and singe away the fog of melancholy.

A Stone for Clergy

Garnet stones embellished the adornments of religious clergy and distinguished noblemen, and lion figurines carved from garnet stone would be carried while traveling for ferocious protection from illness.

Native Americans Revered Garnet

On the North American continent, garnet held special significance as a sacred stone, Native and South American Indians, the Aztecs and the Mayans all revered the stone. Native American healers trusted in garnet’s ability to guard the body against being wounded, repel the potential for poisoning, prevent nightmares and alleviate depression.

Garnet Stone Used in Weaponry

Yet again in history, we see another instance of garnet stone being trusted in battle. Asiatic tribes used arrows fashioned from garnet stone for their bows, believing that garnet stone’s blood-red color was proof of its ability to inflict a deadly wound.

From Bows to Bullets

Eventually, they upgraded to garnet bullets. The most notable instance of this is the Hanza tribe, which in 1892 gunfire in the form of garnet bullets against their British adversaries at the Kashmir frontier.

The History of Prague Garnets

Garnet’s fiery energy has set ablaze the wonder and intrigue of civilizations and cultures from as far back as the Bronze Age, as evidence of garnet jewelry dating back to the Bronze Age was found in graves in former Czechoslovakia.

The Bohemian Garnets of Czechoslovakia

In Czechoslovakia, they were referred to as Bohemian garnets, or Prague garnets, as Bohemian garnet deposits were the hub of the jewelry industry in the region up until the late 1800s.

Bohemia’s Deep Red Pyrope Garnet Stones

Bohemia is known for its deep, red pyrope garnet gemstones. A characteristic of Czech garnet jewelry is that small garnet stones are usually packed together to cover a piece in a stunning display.

A bracelet with red garnet seed clusters sitting on a drawing of a shining star.

The Allure of the Czech Garnet

Mining these beautiful blood-red stones became a fascination for prospectors worldwide, as many flocked from Venice and Italy for the chance to procure this alluring Czech garnet.

Emperor Rudolf II Establishes the Prague Imperial Mill

The mining of Bohemian garnets became quite an industry, as the emperor permitted gem cutters to extract and export the stone in 1598. Emperor Rudolf II furthered the establishment of garnet mining by ordering the institution of an Imperial Mill in Prague strictly for the cutting and drilling crude, raw garnet stone.

Close-up of a deep green uvarovite garnet crystal.

Empress Maria Theresa Stops Garnet Stone Exploitation

However, the exploitation of garnet stone by prospectors from around the world soon came to be a problem, so much so that during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, it was decreed that the right to cut and drill Bohemian garnets would be exclusively provided to the people of Bohemia, and remained this way until the 19th century.

Czech Garnet Shops in Prague and Tourism

To this day, Prague continues to be an attraction for tourists looking to procure beautiful Czech garnets, and the streets of Prague have an abundance of Czech garnet shops.

Prague’s Problem with Fake Garnet Gemstone Sellers

However, where there is opportunity there can also be traps, as there is a prevalence of garnet sellers in Prague’s main shopping district that sell fake garnet gemstones. This has become such a problem that tourist literature often warns you of ways to avoid being shortchanged by fake garnet stone sellers.

Pumpkin Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning

An assortment of different types of pumpkins.

Pumpkin Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning

Pumpkins evoke the magic of the Fall season. When we think of pumpkins, we are reminded of jack-o-lanterns sitting on porches for Halloween, the scent of pumpkin pie baking for Thanksgiving festivities; the warmth of pumpkin-scented candles, and the return of (gasp!) pumpkin spice.

The Quintessential Symbol of Autumn

Pumpkins are intricately connected to Autumn and its various festivities, especially Samhain. Pumpkins help to unveil the intrigue, mystery, and magic of this supernatural time, as pumpkins are intricately connected to the Underworld and the Goddess of Magic.

Lit Pumpkins Guide Spirits and Ancestors

When the veil is at its thinnest, and the spirits of our ancestors and not-so-familiar spirits find purchase in the physical realm once again, it is the glow of carved pumpkins lit with candles from within that help guide the path — or steer them away.

A photo of orange pumpkins taken with a selective focus lens.

Pumpkins Remind Us of Mortality and to Respect the Dead

The spirits of the dead return for a brief moment to remind us that all that is living will one day pass away. In this regard, pumpkins also carry with them the sobering message of our mortality and respect for those that have passed before us.

All Things Come to an End

With the arrival of pumpkins also comes the awareness all things come to an end. The sweltering heat of the summer season is making way for the settling chill of autumn and winter.

Reaping the Fruits of Our Labor

All the planning, preparation, and sowing we had engaged in at the beginning of the growing season now come full circle, and we see the fruits of our labor. The time of growth has come to an end, and now it’s time to harvest and store.

Pumpkins Symbolize Wealth and Prosperity

Pumpkins share many associations with wealth, abundance, and prosperity. It is said that dreaming of a pumpkin patch is a sign that you will come into wealth. This makes perfect sense because being fortunate enough to have a pumpkin patch means having access to abundant fruit that can be used in many fortuitous ways.

Pumpkin Seeds Mean Opportunity

Pumpkin seeds especially seem to evoke the promise of wealth and abundance to come since pumpkins are replete with them and having so many seeds means many opportunities to grow the fruits that will lead to budding prosperity.

Pumpkin Fun Facts

Pumpkins are one of the oldest domesticated plants, with evidence of their use dating as far back as 7,500 to 5,000 B.C.

“Winter Squash” Pie

The pumpkins used for carving jack-o-lanterns are usually not the “pumpkins” used in the canned pumpkin puree, and pie filling found at the grocery store. The canned pumpkin puree is usually made from winter squash, most often butternut squash.

Where Does the Name “Pumpkin” Come From?

The word pumpkin originates from the Greek word pepon (πέπων), which means “large melon,” and is typically used to describe something round and large.

Legend of Stingy Jack • The Story of Jack of the Lantern

Stingy Jack was a drunkard who was known to frequent various villages in Ireland. He was a nuisance with a reputation for being manipulative, deceptive, and general societal runoff.

Satan Hears of Stingy Jack’s Misdeeds

Stories of Stingy Jack’s misdeeds were the everyday talk of the townsfolk, to the point where Satan could not help but overhear a conversation or two in which Jack’s deviant behavior was the focus.

Was Stingy Jack Really As Bad As They Say?

However, Satan was unconvinced that this Stingy Jack could be as vile and manipulative as the legends would have it. Thus he decided to investigate and find out if Stingy Jack lived up to the name he was being given.

A lit jack o' lantern in front of a white picket fence at night.

Stingy Jack Runs into Satan

Stingy Jack, drunk and hobbling through the countryside one day came across a corpse lying on the cobblestone path he was traversing. Upon closer inspection, the corpse revealed itself to be none other than Satan himself.

A Deal with the Devil

He decided to make one final plea to Satan — take Stingy Jack to the local pub so that he could enjoy himself one last bit of ale before his trek into the Underworld. Shock and woe overcame Stingy Jack, as he mournfully realized that if this was Satan, his time had come to an end and Satan was here to harvest his soul.

Stingy Jack Persuades Satan to Transform into a Silver Coin

Satan, feeling quite agreeable today, decided it was a reasonable request so he took Jack to the local pub so that he could enjoy one last drink. A few drinks later at the pub, it was time to pay the tab. Stingy Jack persuaded Satan to pay by suggesting Satan turn himself into a silver coin.

Stingy Jack traps Satan

Satan, a little impressed by Jack’s assertiveness and the boldness of the request did just that. Jack then promptly stuck the silver coin into his pocket which contained a crucifix. Here, Satan found himself in a bit of a predicament — he was now trapped.

Satan Makes A Deal with Stingy Jack for Freedom

Unable to escape, Satan decided to bargain a deal with Stingy Jack: free him from prison, and he would delay coming for Jack’s soul for ten years. Stingy Jack agreed, and Satan was freed.

Stingy Jack’s Bill Comes Due

Like clockwork, ten years later Jack indeed ran into Satan again. He knew what this meant – his borrowed time was now up, and this time his soul was sure to be harvested.

A jack o' lantern draped in faux spiderwebs.

Plotting A New Deception

As Satan was making arraignments to take Jack’s soul, Jack came up with an idea — he would tell Satan he was hungry and request that Satan get him an apple from a nearby apple tree to satiate his hunger before his descent into the Underworld.

Satan Trapped by Stingy Jack Again

Unwittingly, Satan agreed. As he was climbing the apple tree to procure Jack’s apple, Jack quickly surrounded the tree with crucifixes. Again, Satan was trapped.

Stingy Jack Frees Satan on One Condition

Wholly embarrassed, Satan decided to broker another deal with the wily Jack for his freedom. Jack agreed to free Satan, but only on the condition that he never tries to harvest Jack’s soul again. Satan had no choice but to agree.

A jack o' lantern sitting in grass outside at night lit by lights in the background.

Another Demon Claims Stingy Jack’s Soul

However, another demon was coming for Stingy Jack’s soul — the demon of his rampant alcoholism. Jack eventually succumbed to his debilitating addiction it took his life.

God Refuses to Allow Stingy Jack into Heaven

As his soul arrived at St. Peter’s Gate, his entrance into Heaven was curtailed. Not surprisingly, God let Stingy Jack know that because of the sinful, deceitful, alcohol-driven life Jack had led there was no place for Jack in heaven.

A bird's eye view of two jack o' lanterns surrounding by fall leaves and branches.

Stingy Jack Barred from Entering Hell

Barred from Heaven, Stingy Jack tried his luck at the Gates of Hell, but there was a problem — Satan had already agreed not to take Jack’s soul into Hell. Satan had no choice but to fulfill this obligation. Stingy Jack was in a quandary; he could not enter Heaven or Hell. Thus he was stuck traversing the Netherworld for eternity.

The Birth of Jack of the Lantern

To warn others, Satan gave Jack an ember housed in a hollowed-out turnip to light his way throughout the netherworld, as well as warn others that Jack was a permanent citizen of the world between Heaven and Hell. As such, Stingy Jack eventually became known as Jack of the Lantern.

Oshun and Pumpkin Mythology

Oshun is a Yoruban river goddess (orisha) of fertility, love, and wealth and is intricately connected to the magic of pumpkins. As legend would have it, she even stores her magical tools and ingredients in a pumpkin.

Oshun’s Sacred Fruit

Pumpkins are sacred to Oshun, and the pumpkin fruit and its seeds are all considered children of Oshun. Therefore it is important not to consume pumpkin or pumpkin seeds when beseeching the help of Oshun as she finds this quite offensive.

Pumpkin Offerings for Oshun

There are certain magical spells and offerings, however, that you can employ that will garner Oshun’s attention according to your specific needs. As she is a river goddess, the river is where she would receive these offerings.

If you carve the name of the one you wish to love into a pumpkin and throw it into the river, Oshun will be more than happy to assist you with your courtship.

Pumpkin in Mythology: Oshun and the Calabaza

Typical of Yoruba culture are patakis – myths or legends that explain how a Yoruba deity came to be closely associated with or favor a certain food. Oshun is no exception to this rule, and there exists a tale that explains her deep connection to pumpkins.

The Most Beautiful Calabaza in Oshun’s Field

According to the mythology, Oshun had a calabaza (pumpkin) field that she cared for with much love and attention. One of her pumpkins became big, plump, and beautiful, much to the jealousy of the other pumpkins, who saw fit to harass and insult this pumpkin.

Oshun Shows Pity on the Beautiful Pumpkin

Eventually, the abuse became too much to bear, and the beautiful pumpkin cried out to Oshun. Oshun took pity on the pumpkin and brought it inside to sleep with her in her bed. This frustrated Oshun’s husband, Orunmila, who angrily threw the pumpkin onto the floor.

A person in a white lace dress holding a medium-sized pumpkin near her lower torso.

The Beautiful Calabaza Seeks Revenge

The pumpkin was furious at her treatment at the hands of Orunmila and sought her revenge the next day by stealing money from Orunmila that he desperately needed to pay his gatekeeper, Echu.

The Pumpkin Stokes the Fires of Animosity

But Echu was not sympathetic. He demanded Orunmila pay him or he would do whatever he needed to ruin Orunmila and Oshun’s marriage. This enmity proved to be a fortuitous outcome for the pumpkin, and she proceeded to stoke the fires of animosity.

Adding Alcohol to the Fire

The pumpkin supplied Echu with an ample amount of liquor to stimulate his malcontent but made him ensure he would not harm Oshun. Echu, fueled by an alcohol-laden haze, cycled out of control as Orunmila’s fortunes, too, began to turn for the worse with the loss of his finances.

Two bright orange pumpkins on a dark gray wooden surface.

Orunmila Confronts a Drunk Echu

The two eventually collided, as one day, a broke and destitute Orunmila returned home and tripped over a deeply inebriated Echu lying on his floor. Orunmila confronted Echu, asking him why in the world he was lying drunk on Orunmila’s floor.

Echu Blames the Pumpkin for His Drunkenness

Echu, speaking through his drunken stupor, placed the blame on the pumpkin and told Orunmila to ask her. So Orunmila went to Oshun and requested that Oshun interrogate her pumpkin and ask her how she was responsible for Echu’s debilitated condition.

Oshun Confronts the Pumpkin

Oshun confronted the pumpkin with these inquiries. The pumpkin was unwilling to admit to the charges placed before her but eventually gave up that she did steal money from Orunmila, but only to give the money to Oshun.

Slicing the Pumpkin Open for the Truth

Oshun was unconvinced the pumpkin was telling the truth, and after a while of chasing her fleeing pumpkin around the house, she captured the pumpkin and sliced her open to discover what secrets the pumpkin had been keeping from her. Within the pumpkin now split in twain were two gold coins she had stolen from Orunmila.

Oshun Eats the Pumpkin and Becomes the Guardian of Money

So, perhaps as a punishment or probably because there’s no good reason to let a good pumpkin go to waste, Oshun consumed the pumpkin. It is through this tale that Oshun came to be known as the Guardian of Money.

The Crystal Forge: How is Garnet Formed?

The Crystal Forge: How Garnet is Formed

Deep within the Earth’s hottest places, in areas where molten and basaltic lava flows like rivers of fire incinerating and transforming the landscape upon which it traverses, and where subsurface magma chambers erupt with immense heat and tempestuous ferocity, the magic is forming.

A Product of Intense Pressure

Garnet is the product of intense pressure and heat. Deep source volcanic eruptions often create the conditions that are just right for this stone forged from force and fire to emerge.

A garnet beaded ring sitting on a seashell.
Garnet Loving Life Ring from Conscious Items.

Garnet is Created by Convergence

Most garnet is the product of converging plates of rocks with a high aluminum content, such as shale, merging with such intensity that they create something of startling power and brilliant form.

Heat That Can Break Chemical Bonds

The sheer heat and intensity of such an awesome geological event are enough to break chemical bonds and cause minerals to change their crystalline structures in such a way to adapt to this fierce and powerful environment.

The Defiant Garnet Stone

As the rocks are transformed by the violently shifting and forcefully changing environment, tiny grains of garnet begin to form and grow in defiance of their challenging environment. The rocks and minerals nearby the emerging garnet stones must make way or be included within its impenetrable form.

Garnet Within a Matrix

Garnet can also be found freed from sedimentary rocks that have eroded and weathered over time. Frequently you will discover garnet woven together within the matrix of igneous rocks such as granite. You can find evidence of this in granite countertops, which often contain dark red granite stone traces.

The Amethyst Stone for Anxiety

The Amethyst gem is a stone for those who could use a little extra calm in their lives — basically all of us. Hence why it is one of the more popular crystals when it comes to dealing with stress and anxiety.

How Does Amethyst Relieve Stress?

Amethyst can help bring you to a state of balance and calm. It is a tempering stone, bolstering our patience when we lack it. Furthermore, it helps our spirit find a state of calm and contentedness. It helps steady the mind, making it easier for us to keep our emotions stable and level.

Amethyst and the Crown Chakra

It’s hard to imagine a more complete coupling than Amethyst and meditation. Amethyst’s energy resonates with the Crown Chakra. Located above the head, the Crown Chakra is the very place where enlightenment originates. Not to mention, self-enlightenment is the main pursuit of meditation.

Amethyst Crystal Meditation

Hence, it is not a bad practice to keep Amethyst nearby for your meditative sessions. When meditating, allow Amethyst to initiate the experience by calming your mind and body in preparation. Accept its assistance in dispelling any illusions of ego that can stand in the way of your accessing divine insight.

Amethyst Bath

Use amethyst for a meditative bath. Circle a light purple candle with amethyst stones on an area near your bathtub and light the candle to encourage meditative, introspective, and intuitive energies while enjoying a relaxing bath.

Emotional Healing with Amethyst

Bacchus cried tears of violet over the Amethyst stone, turning it purple. It was an outpouring of mournful emotion that ultimately gave Amethyst its hypnotic color.

Pour Your Emotions into the Amethyst Gem

Likewise, you can relieve yourself of overwhelming emotions by “pouring” them into the Amethyst stone. Take a piece of Amethyst stone and find a peaceful spot outside. Picture the feelings burdening you pouring into the crystal like a deep, purple wine.

Allow Amethyst to Absorb Your Toxic Emotions

Make sure to allow the Amethyst stone to absorb every drop of emotion that is not serving you well. Allow those toxic emotions to flow into the crystal like a bitter wine you need to discard. The Amethyst stone can take its fill and then some.

Throw the Emotions Away

Once you feel you’ve emptied every last drop of negative emotion into the stone, hurl it far away from you. You can scream or yell or even howl as you thrust the stone if it helps you finally relieve yourself of those feelings.

The Earth Will Cleanse Your Emotions

As for the stone, the earth will do its part to cleanse it of all the negative energies you poured into it. But if by happenstance you run across that stone once again, do not pick it up, for you have moved on. Leave it just where it lies.

Amethyst Enhances Intuition

If you tend to lean towards a more psychic persuasion, Amethyst is an excellent companion for your transcendent mind. It can help energize intuition, making it easier to know and understand divinatory information.

Using Amethyst for Psychic Protection

An attack on your psychic mind doesn’t have to constitute someone giving you the evil eye. It can be any force that seeks to corrupt and pervert your spirit. That’s why it’s prudent to be mindful of this and protect yourself psychically with Amethyst.

A Protective Shield with Amethyst

Envision the stone’s energy forming a violet shield around your whole body. This protective shell will keep misaligned spiritual energies from entering your spiritual space and causing you psychic harm.

Lucid Dreaming with Amethyst

Often we are passive actors in our dreams. Our dream plays out how it will, without much intervention from the dreamer. If we don’t play an active role in our dreams, recalling them can be difficult.

Remember Your Dreams with Lucid Dreaming

This is unfortunate because our dreams hold many important messages and symbols that can lead to powerful insights. To not miss out on these symbols, you might turn to lucid dreaming to better remember them.

What is Lucid Dreaming?

While lucid dreaming, you are self-aware of the fact that you are dreaming. Consequently, you can become a more active participant in your dream. You may even be able to control how things play out.

Using Amethyst for Lucid Dreaming

A little amethyst tucked away under your pillow can help make your attempts at lucid dreaming more successful. Additionally, if you find yourself frequently having trouble getting to sleep altogether,

How Amethyst Encourages Lucid Dreams

Amethyst can help quiet the mind, making sleep more accessible. In keeping with its power of moderating overindulgence, you can rest assured that Amethyst will also aid you in making sure you don’t oversleep.

Amethyst in Greek Mythology

The most popular myth involving amethyst is a rather recent phenomenon. French poet Remy Belleau’s (1528 – 1577) poem “L’Amethyste, ou Les Amours de Bacchus et de Amethyste” is a story about Amethyste, a maiden, and her unfortunate encounter with the god of wine and revelry, Bacchus.

Amethyste Pursued by Bacchus

Bacchus was heedlessly pursuing Amethyste, who had been rebuffing his advances. She wished to remain chaste and petitioned the gods to help her remain so. Diana granted her request, turning her into a clear quartz crystal.

Bacchus Turns Amethyste Purple with Wine

Realizing her dedication to chastity, Bacchus was humbled. He poured wine over the crystal in tribute to Amethyste, turning it purple.

Other Variations of Amethyst Mythology

However, there are other variations of this story. One would have it that Bacchus was angry over an insult. Therefore, out of rage proclaimed that the first person to cross his path would be fed to his tigers.

Amethystos Protected from Tigers by the Gods

Unfortunately, this fate fell on the head of a maiden named Amethystos. She was on her way to the shrine of Diana as she crossed Bacchus’ path. As she was fed to the tigers, she petitioned her goddess for protection.

Bacchus Cries Purple Tears Over Amethyst Crystal

In turn, the gods transformed her into a clear, white crystal. As Bacchus’ ruthlessness became evident to him, he mournfully cried violet tears over the crystal, turning it purple.

Amethyst Mythology is a Recent Phenomenon

It is important to note, however, that this myth is a rather recent phenomenon. There is no mention of it in classical sources. The Amethyst gem is mentioned in a historical text, but as a gift from the titan Rhea to Dionysus to help him preserve his sanity.
